Abstract
工学と科学のためのCLIL 教材の設計 - 工学教員と英語教員の協働制作 -
A Design of Task-Based CLIL Teaching Materials for Engineering and Science

工学専攻の学生を対象にした英語教育の教材をCLIL の原理に基づいて設計した。高専高学年生および大学の学部生は専門分野への高い関心と深い知識を持ちながら、ある課題に対して思考した内容を英語で表現する教育の機会は少ない。例えば分野横断の実務課題を英語で表現することは「思考力・表現力」を強化する。また学習意欲の向上、モチベーションの維持、実務への関心なども副次的な向上効果として挙げられる。以上の背景から、工学英語教育の方法にCLIL（Content and Language Integrated Learning:内容言語統合型学習）を適用した。特に思考力と表現力を同時に向上させる方法を、工学教員と英語教員のチームで議論し、そのフレームワークを構築した。具体的にはCLIL の原理に基づいてタスクベースのCLIL 教材を設計し制作した。また企業技術者の実務的な職務ダイアログを分析整理して，大学および大学院で利用できる英語教の制作も試みた。
本報告では、本教材のコンセプトとコンテンツ設計の手法を提案する。コンテンツ設計とは、例えば 1.トピックスの選定方法、2.工学教員と英語教員の役割、3.CLIL の４C(Content, Cognition, Communication, Community)とタスクの創案、4.CLIL Lesson Plan の作成と授業設計などを含む。教材内のタスク指示の中でも英語理解のための足場材料を与えるが、工学の題材やコンテンツ自体は既習内容であり、すでに足場材料として働いている。一方、高等教育機関の工学系学生に対して、彼らのキャリア育成を考慮した「企業内実務を題材にしたCLIL 英語教材の開発」も探求してきた。それは、企業内の実務で直面する課題とその会話を含んだ実務的コミュニケーションを英語教材として利用する教育方法である。海外で働くことへの意識の高まりや、言語機能への意識の高まりなどが期待された。後半では、この「技術者の職務ダイアログから学ぶ英語教育の効果」も合わせて報告する。

CLIL Integration in an Undergraduate Engineering Context: A Balanced
Approach

This presentation will introduce a CLIL-based curriculum currently used in second-year Technical Communication English courses at the Yamaguchi University Faculty of
Engineering. Following a brief explanation of the faculty’s English program history and
background, the presenters will outline the course’s core components, including learning objectives, pedagogical implementation, content topics, and classroom activities using excerpts from the course textbook. The textbook, produced in-house by the course instructor, represents an effort to address the challenges educators face while attempting to reconcile the four primary educational goals of CLIL (Content, Communication, Culture, and Cognition) with the institutional realities of the engineering faculty, which include a focus on proficiency exam scores, students of varying language skills and academic majors, and instructors possessing limited knowledge of the target material. As a building block to developing materials
specifically for advanced-level English learners, insights from peer observation of an
actual lesson will be offered through the lens of the 4Cs framework of CLIL. This
includes (1) content relevant to architectural design engineering, (2) communication using relational, causal, and representational sentence structure, (3) intercultural and interdisciplinary groupings, and (4) a well-balanced task design requiring learners’ higher-order and lower-order thinking skills to cope with students’ differing English competencies. Our aim is to provide a flexible and feasible vision that the audience can draw inspiration from to better adapt CLIL approaches to their specific education context.

This workshop will give an overview of the objectives and work of the CLIL Teacher
Education Program (CTEP) done by CLIL Institute for Teacher Education (CLIL-ite) in
2023 with a specific focus on creating and sharing CLIL multimedia materials with a view to an understanding of translanguaging within the CLIL classroom.
In this workshop, we will briefly discuss the fundamental aspects of developing CLIL materials based on the 4 Cs framework by organically linking them together. Creating appropriate CLIL materials is directly related to the success of a CLIL class. We hope this workshop will benefit you in helping you create CLIL materials within your own teaching contexts.
