Bridging Language and Content: The evolution of CLIL

The 8th J-CLIL Bilingual Conference was held at Tohoku University in Sendai under the theme “Bridging Language and Content: The Evolution of CLIL.” The conference brought together educators, researchers, and practitioners from Japan and overseas and was well attended both onsite and online. The programme featured approximately 40 presentations, including online video sessions, with presenters from Japan, Ireland, Taiwan, Russia, Bulgaria, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The conference provided a broad overview of current developments in CLIL, combining practical classroom-based presentations with empirical research across a range of educational contexts, from junior and senior high schools to universities and teacher education. Topics included CLIL assessment, writing and vocabulary development, learner autonomy, critical thinking, embodied learning, translanguaging, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the use of generative AI in CLIL teaching and materials development.

The programme also included a CLIL-ite workshop for school-age learners focusing on SDG 13 and climate action, providing participants with an opportunity to observe CLIL in practice. The conference concluded with a plenary presentation on the evolution of CLIL in Ireland, highlighting developments in policy, teacher education, and classroom practice. Overall, the conference provided a valuable forum for sharing research, practical experience, and new directions in CLIL while strengthening J-CLIL’s growing international community.
