The 9th J-CLIL Tohoku Chapter Conference was held on July 25, 2026, at Tohoku Gakuin University’s Itsutsubashi Campus and was well attended by researchers and practitioners interested in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). The conference featured a diverse range of presentations addressing current issues in CLIL research and practice in Japanese higher and school education.
The morning sessions explored flexible approaches to CLIL and the use of narrative, testimony, reflection, and intercultural dialogue in disaster-prevention education. In the afternoon, presentations examined scaffolding and knowledge construction in an EMI chemistry classroom, vocabulary development and conceptual understanding in an SDGs-based CLIL course, the redesign of presentation tasks to support students’ thinking, and co-creative, artefact-based approaches to promoting learner agency.
The conference concluded with an interactive workshop, “Designing Effective CLIL Lessons: Foundations, Scaffolding, Translanguaging, and AI-Assisted Materials Development.” Participants explored CLIL lesson design, content and language objectives, scaffolding, translanguaging, and the use of generative AI for developing teaching materials. The programme provided opportunities for discussion, networking, and the exchange of practical ideas for developing CLIL in diverse educational contexts.
